Finals is the most stressful time of the year, and lucky for college students, it comes twice a year. There is so much work that needs to me done and so many tests that needed to be studied for. Since finals started, Iv'e been living in the library and staying awake for very long periods of time so that I can get everything done in time.
I'm so greatful that the library has extended hours for finals because if they didn't, I probably would get nothing done. I only have two final exams during exam week but I have alot of work to hand in. I would actually rather study for a test then do real work. I just can not wait for this week to be over so I have nothing else to worry about and no school work to do. Christmas break is all about making money and just relaxing while being at home with friends and family. I am also stressed though because I have to pack everything that is in my room so I can move out of my dorm and into an apartment off campus. I'm so excited to be moving off campus next semester but I hate packing and moving all of my stuff. I know it will be worth it in the end though!

Library
Throughout highschool I never went to our school library or my public library to do schoolwork. I never found it necessary but I still always got my work done. Now that I'm in college, it is impossible for me to get my work done anywhere else. Maybe it's because I live in a dorm where there are tons of distracting things. There are some places in the library where I know I can't get anything done but other then those certain spots, there are so many little niches that you can find where no one will bother you. I always tell myselft that I'm going to stay in my room and do work all night but it never happens. I end up going on my computer to do a million other things, watch television, or just fall asleep. Having the library is such a convenience and I can't believe I never took advantage of it in my higschool. I think if there was no library at SUNY Cortland, I would probably fail out because I would never get any work accomplished. It's also a great meeting place if you have to do group projects or you want to study with someone in one of your classes. Sometimes your room just isn't a good place to do work or study. I would much rather study in a loud library then in my room with a million distractions of other things I could be doing
Cortland Friends
I've been asking some of my friends what I should blog about and everyone of their answers is ,"me". So I guess that's what I'll write about...
Leaving my friends at home to go away to school was really hard for me and I thought that no one would ever be able to replace them or have as much fun with me as they did. I had the greatest summer before school started and I didn't even want to come to school after it. I just wasn't interested in meeting any new people because I thought I had all I needed already.
When I came to school I loved my roomates and I had so much fun with them. But they ended up transferring and I was left with my other friends across the hall. I immediately became best friends with them and also became friends with the boys that lived upstairs. I would never imagine becoming so close to a group of people in my life but I definetaly was wrong. I couldn't picture leaving these people when summer came and I didn't know what to do. The experience of meeting these new 12 best friends was so great that I knew that I had to pledge for a sorority were I could meet even more people. When I was pledging, I became really close to two girls , Bridget and Dana. Now we are all inseperable and we do absouletely everything together. My life would be so different if these girls weren't in my life and there is never a dull moment when wer'e all together. Once again, I was incredibly happy with my decision to join this sorority. Along with having my group of 12 best friends from my first dorm building, my two best friends in my sorority, I also had 70 other girls to turn to whenever something was wrong.
Even after joining my sorority, I still continue to meet new people and have best friends that aren't in my sorority and didn't live in my freshman dorm. I can't beleieve I ever thought about passing up the oppurtunity to meet new people and new best friends. Now, I could never picture not meeting these friends and they have all impacted my life in such a huge way.

Coffee
I definetaly think that I drink way too much coffee. So far today I have had 3 cups and I could go for some more right about now. I know that it's not good for you and it makes your teeth yellow but it always wakes me right up and makes me feel so alert. Even though the taste isn't the greatest when you first try it, you become accustom to it and it starts to taste good.
It suprises me so much that there are people out there that don't drink coffee. It's usually because they don't like the taste but if they just drank it a couple of times then they would start to like it. I feel like the downside to drinking cafeine gets outweighed by all the positive effects. I'm really not a fan of soda or tea but I can drink coffee everyday for the rest of my life and I think that everyone else should too.

My Birthday
Last week was my birthday and it was so much fun. Maybe not as fun as it would have been if it wasn't a week before finals and on a Monday but it was still fun. I had classes all day and it was freezing outside so as soon as my classes were over I went to my friends suite and I got presents, pizza, and a cake. My present was a pet fish that I named Snookie after the girl in Jersey Shore.
After all of that I went out with all my friends and had a good time. I really love my birthday because I tell everyone and the day is all about me. There's only one day a year that you can say, "It's my birthday" and get away with alot of things so you might as well take advantage of it. I used to love birthdays as a little kid because you would have a huge birthday party, send out invitations, and give out goody bags. Goody bags were definetaly the best part of birthday parties when I was younger. That was probably half the reason i would go. As I'm getting older, I know that besides my next couple of birthdays, they're not going to be as fun and exciting as they are now and as they used to.

Blackberry
Over Thanksgiving break my phone break and I had to get another one. I was using my upgrade so I thought that I might as well get a nice phone because I'm going to have it for a while. I picked out the blackberry because everyone is always raving about it seemed like a really hi-tech phone. So I decided to get the new blackberry tour
I have always used my phone alot and kept it on me all the time but getting the blackberry has put me on a whole different level. I can not go anywhere without it and it's always in my hand no matter what. I sleep with it right under me and I check it every two seconds. Now i really know why they call it a crackberry. But why wouldn't anyone be addicted to it? It has everything that you need on a computer, on your phone. It fowards all your email to your phone, you can go on facebook, aim, or any site on the internet, and you can download hundreds of different applications that you always use.
Getting my blackberry was definetaly the best decision I could have made and paying the extra 30$ a month is totally worth it. I would reccomend this phone to anyone who was considering buying it

My new cat Cleopatra
I just got a new cat recently and it is the cutest thing ever. I usually really don't like cats and I'm not that much of an animal person at all but this cat has grown on me. My mom found it outside on the street and it was just a little kitten. We brought it into our house and it looked very nervous and wouldn't eat. We put up alot of signs around our neighborhood trying to find its owner but nobody had gotten back to us.
After a while we gave up looking for its owner and decided to keep it. The owner probably didn't want the cat anymore and left it on the side of the ride because this cat is a beautiful siamese that is worth alot of money. Just last week, my mom took the cat to get fixed and they found that there was 6 tumors inside of the cat and it needed immediate surgery. My family thought that maybe the surgeries were too expensive for the owner and they couldn't deal with their pet anymore. But one person's loss is another persons gain and now my family has a beautiful siamese cat that we love alot.
Global Warming
Global warming is such an interesting topic to me because it amazes me that it is said that our world will end soon and there are so many people not making any changes. Don't people want their grandchildren and their grandchildren's grandchildren to lead happy lives in a nice environment. If everyone made small sacrifices and changes then maybe we could slow down the effects of global warming and not increase them. The rate that we're going at now, it does not seem that any effects are being slowed down. Our society and many other societies around the world, rely so heavily on technology, oil, and big businesses that we keep polluting more and more instead of reducing the amount of emissions that we are letting escape into the atmosphere.
Change isn't that hard as long as it is a large body of people that are making significant changes. I would never want to think that Earth as we know it , would no longer exist or the human race would be extinct because of things that our generation and the generation before us caused. We should all work together to keep our environment safe and clean and do anything we can to prevent global warming.
My Roomate
Since the beginning of my college experience, I have had a total of 4 roomates and I'm only in the first semester of my sophmore year. It's not that I have been a bad roomate or that no one wants to live with me but first semester my freshman year both my roomates transferred because Cortland wasn't for them and the next semester, me and my roomate did not get along. Since we didn't get along we decided not to be roomates this semester so once again I was getting another roomate. When summer was almost over I got a letter in the mail saying my roomates name was Yannett and she was from the Bronx. I tried to contact her but we never were able to talk before moving in. I was scared that we weren't going to get along and that we didn't speak over the summer. Then once the semester started and I moved in, she was not there yet and I still couldn't get in contact with her. A couple days went by and I still had no roomate.
One night I was with my friends at a house and I got a phonecall from my new roomate saying she was moving in that night. It was really late at night so I that was wierd and got a little nervous. But as soon as she walked into the building, she was all smiles and I knew I was going to love her. Being her roomate for this whole semester has been the greatest experience and I could never ask for a better roomate. She is such a warm-hearted, sweet, and genuine person that I hope to always keep in touch with. Unfortunately , our dorm building is being renovated next semester so I am moving off campus and we will no longer be roomates. I am so sad that we won't be living in the same room anymore but I know we will still see eachother all the time. =)

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving break was interesting. Even though I had alot of fun with my friends and family, it turned out that there was suprising news that everyone had found out. For a while now my grandma has always been saying how stressed out she is and that she has alot on her plate to deal with but I never knew why. She would never really talk about what was bothering her but I knew it was something. On Thanksgiving my uncle who is also my godfather, had came to my grandparents which is something he rarely did. He is always nasty and never wants to talk to anyone in my family and he walks around being grumpy all the time. My mom finally ended up freaking out and complaining about how my uncle is always being so unfriendly and mean. My grandma finally didn't want to hear that anymore and told my mom that my uncle has cancer. This was such suprising news to us and the more suprising part was that my grandma has known for two years that my uncle is sick and she has not told anyone. His daughter,my cousin, and someone who I used to be very close with , doesn't even know that he is sick and doesn't get to see him often because she doesn't live with him. Somehow we need to figure out a way to tell her and help her cope with whatever will happen next. Great Thanksgiving right?

Stress
These last couple of weeks have been overwhelmingly stressful and I just can't stop thinking about everything that is going on and all the things that I have to do. It might seem like I don't have that many responsibilities, from the outside looking in but I think in general it is so hard to be a college student.
Because of the recession, it doesn't make it any easier to be living away from your family or to ask your family for money. Money is a huge issue for most people in college because you are paying for everything on your own when you either don't make money or make very little of it.
Of course the real cause of my stress is school work. It seems like everytime I look in my planner the work keeps growing and the days of the week start coming to an end.
Stress is a wierd thing to think about because you know that in the end, everything will get done and when it does, you wonder why you were even stressing in the first place. The best thing I can do when I have so much work, bills, and places to go, is to write everything down. This way I will know exactly what needs to be taken care of that week and I can use my time management skills more sufficiently

ghost stories
Yesterday I was sitting in my room doing my homework and my roomate came in laughing hysterically. She said that something wierd had happened in the room that she was just in upstairs the night before. She started telling me that her friend told her a story of how when she was in the room by herself she heard knocking coming from the other side of the wall but oddly enough there was no other room on the other side of the wall. Then she told another story of how the day before that, she herself was in the bathroom alone and she could hear noises and footsteps coming from the stall next to her and then water dripping. She said that she knows of all the ghosts in other building in Cortland but she had never heard of anything about our building.
Because I'm taking this CPN class and have been more open to debunking myths and legends along with being skeptic, her story made me think more in depth if she actually believed it and if something like this could actually happen. My roomate got into detail of all the ghost stories in Cortland and all of them seemed like they were made up and just got passed on from one year to another because they were interesting. If I didn't read all of the stories that have debunked myths and made them seem like it was impossible for it to ever happen, I would have probably believed her story and been amazed, just like everyone else that she'll tell these stories too.

Car Accident
Two years ago I was in a bad car accident that really affected my senior year of highschool. It started out on a nice Friday summer day and I had just finished working as a counselor at a summercamp. It was my last day of camp and I had also taken off my other two jobs so that I could have a couple of weeks to hang out with friends and relax before school started. A couple of days before this Friday I am reffering to, my best friends boyfriend had come home from the army and I had been hanging out with him and all his friends. One of his friends and I really got along and I always saw him when I would be out with my friend and her boyfriend. So this particular night I decided to hang out with them again. I made plans to go out to eat with my best friend, her boyfriend(Paul), and his friends. I didn't drive at the time so my friends boyfriend picked me up and we met up with his friend at work. My friends then suggested that I should drive in the car with Paul's friend so then I could sit in the front seat. I didn't argue and just went in the car like was suggested. I didn't really know this kid but I wasn't at all worried and it just felt like any other Friday night. Before I knew it, I woke up unconcious with my wrists dangling by skin and me not knowing where I was. I was immediately rushed to the hospital where my parents and friends had met me. I soon found out that both my wrists were broken. I thought it was the worst thing that could happen because now I wasn't going to have the rest of my summer to enjoy but that wasn't nearly as bad as not being able to use both of your hands for anything. I then had to miss 2 months of my senior year and get surgery on both my wrists. This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had and it has definetaly taught me to be more safe while in a car

Internet
| I was getting ready to write this blog but I realized that picking a topic isn't as easy as it sounds when its your choice to write about anything. So I started stalling and doing everything else on the computer besides writing this blog and it occured to me how dependent I am of the internet and my computer. The other day my computer had a virus so I couldnt use it and I didn't know what to do with myself. Everytime I come home or back to my dorm, I go on facebook or other websites and can spend hours looking at everything possible. Don't get me wrong , the internet is great and I dont know where we would be without it but do we really need to be on it as much as our generation is. I was reading an article a couple of weeks ago that talked about the dangers of being on facebook. Not the dangers as in talking to creeps that could find you and do something to you but dangers as in being isolated in a virtual world. The article made a point that instead of hanging out with someone or calling them over the phone, we talk to them via facebook or aim because you can avoid confrontation. Even though its easier to talk over the internet, it probably doesn't help anyones social skills. Over the computer you can hide behind your screen and be anyone that you want to be because your not actually interacting with anyone face to face. |
